FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • DO I NEED PRIOR ROWING EXPERIENCE?

No. All skill levels are welcome to row with BAYR. Because rowing is relatively new to the area, we expect many of our participants will have limited exposure to the sport. Our coaches are experienced coaching all levels of rowers — from complete beginners to members of the national rowing team.

  • WHAT AGES ROW WITH BAYR?

BAYR is open to area youth, ages 10-18. If you are an adult interested in rowing, contact the Lake Purdy Rowing Association.

  • DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM?

Yes. Although we hope to spend most of our time “round side down,” rowers can find themselves on the wrong side of the hull. For safety, we ask that all of our rowers are proficient swimmers. All rowers should be comfortable swimming and treading water.

  • WHEN DOES BAYR PRACTICE?

Practices are held at the Lake Purdy Rowing Club after school and on Saturday mornings. The exact time may vary, depending on the season and program level. For the fall 2016 season, practice times are as follows:

    Competitive Team:

    September 6th –  December 10th

    Monday-Friday from 4:30-6:30pm

    Saturday from 7:30-9:30am

    Recreational Team:

    September 10th – December 10th

    Tuesday from 4:15-6:00pm

    Saturday from 9:00-10:45am

  • WHERE DOES BAYR ROW?

We row on the beautiful Lake Purdy. It is 30-minutes south-west of Birmingham. For directions, click here.

  • HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The cost for the 2016 fall season is $300 per recreational rower and $700 per competitive rower. In addition, all rowers must pay a $75 lake access fee per season. Rowers intending to row year-round can pay a once-yearly lake access fee of $125.

  • WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Dress in layers, particularly in cooler months. Synthetic is preferable to cotton in the even it rains or rowers get wet.

Wear tight-fitting clothing. Loose clothing can get caught in the seat tracks or can cause hands and oar handles to get caught up in excess material. Spandex shorts/leggings and close-fitting shirts are preferable. Athletic pants or shorts can be worn over spandex before and after rowing.

Don’t forget socks. Rowers usually wear socks while rowing in shoes that are secured to the boat.

  • WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO PRACTICE?

    All rowers should bring:

    • water
    • sunscreen
    • a hat and/or sunglasses
    • socks
    • flip flops or water shoes
    • running shoes
    • a towel and a change of dry clothes
